Welcome Message

The Singapore Medical Journal (SMJ) was founded nearly half a century ago in 1960, and is proud to celebrate its 50th year of publication this year.

Besides publishing a "Distinguished Editor's series" in six of 12 issues of Volume 50 of SMJ 2009 and co-organising several medical writing workshops in cooperation with the Malaysian Medical Association, we will be concluding our Golden Jubilee celebrations by hosting the SMJ Golden Jubilee Conference on 4 – 8 November 2009. Reflecting its close association with the Asia Pacific Association of Medical Journal Editors (APAME), this Golden Jubilee Conference will comprise the Second Joint Meeting of APAME and the Western Pacific Region Index Medicus (WPRIM)—an important project of the World Health Organization (WHO) Regional Office—on 4 – 5 November, an International Forum on Academic Medical Publishing on 6 November, and a Medical Writing Workshop on 7 – 8 November 2009. True to the educational mission of the SMJ and co-organiser National Cancer Centre Singapore, the Medical Writing Workshop will also serve as a "train-the-trainers" workshop for editors of selected regional journals from the WHO Western Pacific Region.

At the International Forum on 6 November, various issues relating to dissemination of quality health information and problems faced by journals and editors in the Asia-Pacific region will be presented and discussed by a distinguished panel of speakers. The "Singapore Declaration on Equitable Access to Health Information in the Western Pacific Region" will also be jointly announced by APAME and WPRIM.

We are grateful to Professor Ranga R Krishnan, Dean of the Duke-National University of Singapore Graduate Medical School, for agreeing to be guest-of-honour of the Golden Jubilee Conference and for delivering the opening speech at the International Forum.

We welcome all who are interested in academic medical publishing to join the SMJ in celebrating its Golden Jubilee.

Professor Wilfred CG Peh
